Mama Nutmeg came from a shelter with 20 other senior Chihuahuas. After their elderly owner passed away, and no family could take them in, they were sent to a shelter. Thankfully, she was adopted by our founder, and lived many years helping advocate for other senior pets in need. This organization is her legacy.
April began her rescue journey in 2007, volunteering at her local animal shelter. In 2011, she found her love of rescue by helping Long Way Home Sanctuary in College Station. By 2012, she co-founded the Long Way Home Pit Bull Rescue, then shortly after, the Long Way Home Adoptables rescue. And in 2025, in honor of her beloved Mama Nutmeg, she founded the Mama Nutmeg Foundation. From organizations small and large, April loves to support the community through partnerships and Advocacy.
Kellye has been a driving force in all of April's community efforts. With the business knowledge she gained at Texas A&M University, and her savvy operations and financial acumen, she has been instrumental in the development, growth, and success of Long Way Home and The Mama Nutmeg Foundation. Kellye has been equally integral to the foundation and operations of mom's beloved organization, Take Me Home Transport, whose mission is to transport shelter pets from at-risk Texas shelters to rescue partners up North.
